The way pupils learn to read has been transformed since the last inspection.
Read Write Inc. Scheme
In school we follow the Read Write Inc scheme across school to teach phonics and spelling.
In EYFS and Year 1 children will be following the Read Write Inc phonic scheme which will support their phonic knowledge and their reading. Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.
In year 2-6 they move on to completing a spelling book which is split up into sections and taught 10 minutes a day. These sessions are interactive and build on prior knowledge each year. Every week your child will be tested on ‘Jumping Orange’ words which can also be found in your child’s reading records. These spellings are also assessed through your child’s independent writing and count towards them achieving the expected standard in year 6.
Any spellings they are struggling with will be sent home and should be revisited as much as possible, which is why it is important for children to bring in their reading record on a daily basis.

EYFS, KS1 and LKS2 (Years 3 & 4):
Children must have their reading diaries signed to change their book. Diaries are checked weekly, and children who read frequently can take home more than one book. -
UKS2 (Years 5 & 6):
To promote independence, book changes are based on successful completion of Accelerated Reader quizzes. Teachers monitor that quizzes are being completed and passed before children move on to a new book. We recognise that older children may read longer books, and this is always taken into account.

- Decoding skills are vital for children to become confident and fluent readers

- Reading for pleasure and reading for purpose are equally important
- Developing an environment which supports and encourages reading is vital.
