We want to ensure that our children have a sense of belonging to the “Greswell Family”.

To work together and give our children a sense of belonging and responsibility to care for themselves and the other members of our school family. To share a love of learning and a sense of achievement. To help the children to enjoy the process of the learning journey and see how important learning is. In doing this we want them to achieve the best outcomes for themselves as individuals. Our family extends to parents and carers who are regularly invited to regularly enjoy working alongside their children at regularly planned engagement activities and community events.

We want to ensure that Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education is woven throughout our curriculum.

To develop the character of our children by providing a modern, relevant, and exciting curriculum based around their first-hand experiences and questions. This will then empower pupils to be engaged and creative lifelong learners who can contribute positively to the wider society. The PSHE jigsaw curriculum ensures that children are equipped for the modern world and that they can contribute positively to it. In addition, teachers ensure that all planning includes appropriate opportunities to enhance the children’s awareness of SMSC. We recognise the multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom.

We want to ensure every child can become a confident reader and develop a love of books.

We strive to make learning as interesting and purposeful as possible. The teaching of phonics begins in Nursery with the increasingly us effective use of Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc.

We have a ‘book-based’ approach to our English Curriculum. High quality, challenging, whole-class texts are used to teach many of the English objectives and allow children to immerse themselves in the book. The book then provides a purposeful context for high quality writing opportunities. We encourage children to have pride in their writing across all areas of the curriculum and produce work to a high standard to display on our “Class Writing Walls”

Children visit the school library bus each week and choose their own book to read for pleasure, as well as accessing a progressive reading scheme to help them with reading at home. Children need the space and time to make choices about books, and to discover authors and texts they might not get chance to look at outside of school. Our teachers check we are reading books that will challenge the children and create exciting reading areas around the school. We assess reading using teacher assessment, twice yearly Rising Star papers, along with the Hodder and Stoughton reading assessment to find appropriate bands of books our children.

We want to ensure that children have a range of opportunities in sports through sports clubs, Holiday clubs and attending competitions.

We believe that by providing the children with a wide variety of sporting opportunities, it helps them to improve achievement academically. The opportunities are provided before the school day starts and throughout the school day. The wide variety offered ensures virtually all of the children have activities available which they enjoy. Alongside the opportunities throughout the school day, we provide a large range of sporting clubs after school and during the school holidays so that children have opportunities to develop their skills in their chosen areas. As a school, we provide opportunities for competitive sport, to a large number of children, in a variety of sports. We believe that all of our investment into sporting activities gives the children confidence and a supports the development of their growth mindset, which impacts positively on attitudes to their learning.

Intention 5 - We want to ensure that the children develop the appropriate behaviours and habits to become effective learners.

To develop a growth mind set approach to learning so that pupils become independent enquirers, team workers, reflective learners, effective participators, self- managers, and resourceful thinkers who recognise that their effort is key to their success and who work collaboratively.

We want our children to have a healthy self-image, self-esteem, and self-confidence. We want our children to develop good levels of resilience and the life skills necessary to help them deal with everyday life.

Children are regularly encouraged to learn from their mistakes and not be afraid of failure.

Curriculum Intent and delivery across Foundation Subjects– We intend for all our children to access a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum is used to help children develop their knowledge, skills and understanding to enable them to succeed as learners. Each phase in this school prepares children for the next stage of learning, through the curriculum, expectations, and our life skills.

We plan foundation subjects using our “Sticky Knowledge” long term planner and the National Curriculum objectives. Our “Sticky Knowledge” shows what children should be learning in each year group in each subject and provides a clear sequence to learning throughout school.

We check children’s learning against this document and have our own “Greswell Curriculum” on Classroom Monitor to assess each step, in each year. testing and opportunities for recall are incorporated into lessons to ensure that children retain the appropriate knowledge and skills.

RE, PHSE and Music, do not use the “Sticky Knowledge” document, instead they are delivered by using excellent quality schemes of work and the Music service to enhance their delivery.

Our curriculum encourages children to develop independent thinking skills and questioning. Our teachers plan a wide variety of educational experiences to further develop the children’s knowledge and skills which include visits to relevant places of interest, expert visitors, and hands-on workshops, all of which are recorded in our* “Trips and Experiences log” which shows clear links to subjects and ensures a variety of experiences and trips are undertaken and developed year, upon year. Teachers also plan exciting focus weeks and events like Arts week, School writing experiences, careers and aspirations, team building events, links with local high schools, where possible, opportunities to read and write are given across all areas of the curriculum to foster fluency and purposeful opportunities to use the skills they have acquired.
