We had a fantastic time on our class trip to Manchester!
Our first stop was the Science and Industry Museum where we learned about the History of Manchester and what changes took places that made it the city it is today. We learned that the people of Manchester turned raw cotton into the cotton thread we have today by twisting it, which made it stronger. We even got the opportunity to watch a very loud machine doing this and learned about the dangers of working in a cotton factory.
We learned about steam and how Manchester had the very first inner city railway, powered by steam!
We then explored the city itself and walked to the Roman ruins, where the Romans settled in AD79. We saw an old fort and imagined we were walking into the houses and shops.
Castelfield Bowl was our next stop, where we saw the very first canal built in the world! – Bridgewater Canal. The canals were used to transport the cotton around the country and eventually the world, when the Manchester Shipping Canal was built.
We were lucky enough to go to the top of 20 Stories to see Manchester from the skies. We could see the River Irwell and how close it was to the Roman Settlement and how there are so many different modes of transport in Manchester! Everyone looked like tiny ants below and it was a great experience!
